Gran Canaria Hike #3: Roque Nublo
I’m staying in the village of Tejeda, the 2nd smallest village on the island, for 3 nights and will be hiking around some of Gran Canaria’s most iconic rock formations. The symbol of Gran Canaria, el Roque Nublo, stands here in Tejeda. This is an enormous basalt monolith of over 70m/230ft in height, which formed by volcanic action. Beside Roque Nublo is a rock formation that looks distinctly like a frog. Nearby is another monolith called El Fraile (the monk), as it looks like a praying monk.
Today I hiked a circular route starting and ending here in the village. I enjoyed an ever changing landscape of wildflowers and cactus, volcanic terrain, a visit to the nearby village of La Culata, walked through a lovely pine forest, and enjoyed views to the ocean and the neighboring island of Tenerife. Of course I also powered through the requisite hike up the mountain and back down into the Caldera de Tejeda and back up once again.
Today: 23km/14mi (3days=51km/32mi)
Hike #3 Route Notes: At approximately 8k/5m I hiked through the village of La Culata. In the route notes it says to turn left into town and you “pass two bars.” Why?? Why would I pass two bars?! One bar, yes...but both?
