Gran Canaria Hike #5 (part 2): Pico de las Nieves-La Lechuza
Leaving the tallest peaks of the island, I hiked down the mountain back through the forests, and along the edge of the Caldera which offered even more amazing views.
I think this may be one of my most favorite parts of this entire hiking adventure. The views were truly breathtaking, and I had the entire mountain, woods, and trails all to myself for hours. It was so peaceful and so magnificent; this is what dream hikes are made of. This is also why I LOVE to hike. I am getting to know Gran Canaria intimately through communing with the bounty of nature she has to offer. I think I am in love!
Once down the mountain and out of woods, I entered beautiful farmland and literally hiked into the magical mist & fog as it rolled in. The ever-changing landscape continued to surprise and delight. Horses and goats and wildflowers and butterflies, all expressions of joy.
I stayed the night in the small village of La Lechuza at Hotel Rural Las Calas. Other than one couple that I did not see but once, it was just me there for the night. The lovely person who ran the front desk checked me in, showed me to my room, made me dinner, served me dinner, cleaned up after dinner and locked the front door on her way out for the night. She was back again the next morning to make me breakfast and even had her husband drive me back to Las Palmas.
This was my last hike of the journey and my last night on the road before returning to my lovely apartment on the Las Canteras Beach. It will be fun to take my hiking shoes off and put my bare feet in the sand and surf.
What a fabulous journey this has been, I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Las Palmas. There is much to explore if you can pry yourself off the beach, it is well worth the effort.
Today’s mileage was 20km/12.5m bringing me to a total of 79km/49m in 5 days.
