i Light Singapore

Imagine my luck and surprise that I ended up in Singapore for the Lion City’s Bicentennial commemoration and this amazing light festival.

i Light Singapore is a celebration of sustainability bringing luminous art to Marina Bay.  As Asia’s leading sustainable light art festival, this has become an annual event geared to illuminate the Singapore’s night with radiant works of art from all across the globe.

Held since 2010, i Light Singapore showcases light art installations created by local artists as well as artists from around the world. These light art installations are designed with energy-saving lighting or environmentally-friendly materials to encourage festival goers and the general public to adopt sustainable habits in their everyday lives.

2019’s festival marked a special occasion for the nation, with the Singapore Bicentennial commemoration looking back on seven centuries of heritage, from its 14th-century status as an ancient port of call named Temasek to the turning point of 1819, which marked the arrival of Sir Stamford Raffles on Singapore’s shores.

While i Light Singapore is traditionally held in Marina Bay, the special bicentennial edition saw an expanded presence across the city, with art installations lighting up the Civic District, the Singapore River and Raffles Terrace.

As the anchor event of the Singapore Bicentennial commemoration, the festival featured an immersive, multimedia float show taking place on the historic Singapore River. An immersive spectacle of light, sound and water exploring Singapore’s evolution from fishing village to global metropolis.

The brainchild of Singaporean industrial designer Yun that's co-created with the local community, this installation featured islands of solar light modules in upcycled PET containers. The modules were suspended in air and 'came alive' as they swayed in the wind
