Day 14: Kaikoura

In just 2 days I’ve traveled from the mountains to a city to the Pacific Ocean. I am now in the charming town of Kaikoura, a tiny fishing village on the east coast of New Zealand. Beautiful rocky beaches, lazy seals, loads of activities like swimming with dolphins and whale watching, fishing expeditions, shopping, cafes, pubs…just about anything you want.

The first stop was out at the point to see the seal colony and get a feel for the area. What we found was a couple of very lazy seals and beautiful views.

Hunter dropped me off at my place for the night, the Albatross Backpacker Inn, known as the hostel with soul. This tells you a bit about who they are… (http://albatross-kaikoura.co.nz/)

“Our hostel is set within 3 of Kaikoura’s most historic buildings. Back in 1890, these walls housed the town’s post office, a place where people came to connect with loved ones and strangers near and far. Although many things have changed since then, one thing remains the same; these walls are home to connections. We, Ben and Katie, are the proud owners of The Albatross and have been since 2010.

The Albatross is so much more to us than just a bunch of beds! As travelers, we, like you, know the basics of a hostel. But who just wants a basic life..?! We invite you to join us in our quirky, ever-changing home, share a meal, play a tune, paint a canvas, be yourself and embrace the real backpacker life! Where chats last all night and friends become family in a home that’s built for you. Our house is literally your house.

See you soon, Ben & Katie. And Louie, the hostel cat. Meow”

Famous for its seafood and especially its crayfish, the most talked about and beloved activity was going fishing with Jerry, a local with a small fishing boat. He takes people out to catch fish, then pulls up his crayfish pots and takes everyone back to his house where he cooks up the crayfish and serves you a bottomless glass of wine. Yes...I know what you are thinking...finally something I’d be interested in. 👍😄 I joined the party when everyone got back to Jerry’s. Fun times had by all!!
