Day 44: Finisterre - Muxia, 31.4 km.
Once you've been to the end of the world, where do you go from there?? For us, it was north. By now, we all felt very complete in our journey carrying our packs across the entire country of Spain to the Atlantic Ocean. Today we decided to take a "Caminocation" and for 4€ we taxied our rucksacks to our destination and set off feeling untethered and light as the wind. We arrived as exhausted as ever, having only 1 cafe to stop at for the entire day and pushing ourselves harder since we weren't carrying all we have on our backs. Turns out hiking 20 miles isn't easy no matter the circumstances.
Muxia is a coastal district in la Coruna province on the "costa da morte" (coast of death) above Finisterre. Contrary to popular belief it is actually Muxia (Cabo Tourinan) and not Finisterre that is the most westerly point of mainland Europe. This is one of the many reasons we wanted to continue on…to get to the farthest point we could get to. Not to mention the spectacular views we experienced all along the route. AND we met old friends once again…our horseman w/his horses, and Sven & Teresa plus some friends of theres at our lunch stop. It was a stunning day with lots of fun to be had.
Muxia has a lot to endear it. It really is a beautiful little town and has some stunning beaches in the form of the playas of Muinos, Cruz, Lago, Lourido and Nemina. It has a great little manmade harbour that is walled on two and a half of its sides. There is also a great promenade that runs the full length of the town plotting a course that is parallel with the main coast facing street of Rua Virxe de Barca. So we did what we always do, we got our official pilgrim papers and then headed out to explore the town and take it all the beauty.
So this is it. Our last long walk as a pilgrim. We were aware of the magnitude of the moment yet sometimes that magnitude is just too much to know what to do with, so we did what knew how to do…walk. One foot in front of the other, stay in the moment, be present, have fun, laugh, talk, drink vino tinto, feel grateful, and fall in love over and over again with this incredible experience we all chose to have, at this exact moment in time.
Camino de Santiago & Finisterre-Muxia complete!
