Petrovaradin Fortress, Novi Sad, Serbia
A lovely walk across the Danube river from the old city is the Petrovaradin Fortress, the most visited attraction in Novi Sad. This “Gibraltar on the Danube” is one of the best-preserved fortifications in Europe and it represents an exceptional example of military architecture. Work on the fortress began in 1682 and ended nearly a century later in 1780, with that whole ‘war’ thing causing most of the disruptions. The fortress is now known more for festivals than fighting I’m happy to report, and it is here the well-known EXIT Music Festival takes place every summer.
Located at the top of the Petrovaradin Fortress, is the famous “Drunken Clock,” named as such because its shorthand shows the minutes and its longhand the hours, which made telling time easier for sailors on the Danube back in the day. Additionally, the clock is known to speed up in warm weather and slow down in the cold. And don’t we all!?!
