Upper Austria: Langbathseen

An 8km drive from the village of Ebensee through the mountains comes to an end at one of the most picturesque mountain lakes I’ve ever seen. Langbathsee, on this lovely mid-October day, with the early fall colors and the reflection of the mountains and trees on the still water, was breathtaking.
Truly a jewel of the Salzkammergut, or should I say jewels. There are 2 lakes within hiking distance. Vorderer Langbathsee (Front Langbath Lake) is the larger one and Hinterer Langbathsee (Rear Langbath Lake) the smaller one. There is a lovely “family friendly” walk around both lakes with just a small ascent which is about 8km. We wanted to get a better and more challenging view of the splendor, and because when we see a mountain we climb it, we took the hike up to the 2 summits…Vorderer Signalkogel and Hinterer Signalkogel. This hike offered stunning views of both lakes, the mountains, the changing colors of the forest, and the overall beauty of the surrounding areas. This was a perfect way to end a perfect weekend in the Alps of Upper Austria.
