Austria: Hiking loop around Lake Forstsee
AUSTRIA DAY 5: HIKING in the rain
We packed up and checked out of Das Moser Hotel to go in search of our final hike of the trip. We decided to take it easy today as there was no reason to hike to a summit given the low clouds and the forecast that guaranteed the rain would be here soon. We chose to do a loop around a small lake…Forstsee. The lake lies on a ridge at 601 m (1,972 ft) about 1 km/.6 mi north of the largest lake in the area, Wörthersee.
With a surface of 29 ha/72 acres, it is a small, completely natural, lake. There is a multi-million sustainability project going on and therefore the water was very low, so not particularly scenic at this time. That said…the surrounding forest was beautiful. About 1/2 way through our hike the rains came, making everything feel just that much more magical. Luckily we had our umbrellas and the temperature was still quite warm…so we enjoyed our final hike in the rain.

At our final stop at the grocery store before hiking and heading back to Budapest, I finally was able to photograph this lovely field of gladiolus. Beware of the dangers of urban photography, this turned out to be the most dangerous part of the trip. I was searching for the best angle of the picture, fell off the curb landing sprawled in the middle of the street, with a scraped and bloody knee to show for it. Good grief!! I hope these pictures were worth it!! :-)
